In the News: Setting Precedent and Making History
Mr. Leeds has never shied away from challenging and difficult cases when his clients’ rights are at stake. In one of the more unusual estate litigation cases in New York State, Mr. Leeds represented Mary DiJurico in a will contest involving undue influence. Mr. Leeds successfully argued that Ms. DiJurico’s brother had used hypnotism to manipulate Ms. DiJurico into signing over her estate to him.
In 1990, Mr. Leeds was involved in an estate litigation case involving almost a billion dollars and the largest estate ever probated in Nassau County, winning millions of dollars for beneficiaries. As a result of his involvement, Mr. Leeds also successfully represented Viola Sommer, often described as the wealthiest woman in New York City, who claimed her former attorney had overcharged and defrauded her in the management of her deceased husband’s estate.
In the Anna Nicole Smith case, Mr. Leeds advised and represented Ms. Smith before and after her husband, billionaire J. Howard Marshall II, passed away. Mr. Leeds spent months helping Ms. Smith protect her right and interests, serving as her confidant and consoling her during a difficult time in her life. While Mr. Leeds did not represent her after the Supreme Court issued a ruling regarding conflicting claims made by California and Texas courts, he played a major role in advising and representing her interests in her husband’s estate and will leading up to the Supreme Court decision.
